On Tuesday 25th June, Reading Community Learning Centre proudly hosted a vibrant Women’s Wellness Day — a dedicated event supporting the health and wellbeing of migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women in our community. We are truly grateful to the Mayor of Reading, Cllr Alice Mpofu-Coles who was able to join us at the event and talk to the women and share her own very personal and incredible journey to beat cancer.
The day was filled with warmth, connection, and practical support. Women were able to:
-Receive free health checks from the NHS (Royal Berkshire Hospital) MEET PEET Team and support from Azra Raja (RVA Inclusion Manager)
-Enjoy relaxing hand massages by RCLC beauty tutors and learners
-Take part in free yoga sessions, with an incredible 19 women participating!
In total, 50 women attended the event, with 11 receiving health checks.
Essential health information was also provided through our community health partners, including:
- Utulivu – Community wellbeing and empowerment
- Royal Berkshire Hospital TB Services
- Child Immunisation Information and Flu Vaccinations Information–with translated materials
- Cervical screening and breast health (Royal Berkshire Hospital Nurses) – With videos at 11am and 1pm showing how to check your breasts
- Easy English Antenatal Classes
- Healthwatch Reading – Hearing women’s voices on health services
- Maternity Voices (Royal Berkshire Hospital)
This event was a vital step towards reducing health inequalities, providing women who often face barriers to healthcare with accessible, culturally sensitive support in a safe and welcoming space and translation support from the RCLC team of volunteers and staff.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to all the invited health guests and partners who generously gave their time, knowledge and support. Your contribution helped empower the women we work with and made this event truly impactful.
