Stitching New Beginnings – Sewing Skills for Confidence and Community

Feb 16, 2026 | News

We are delighted to share that Reading Community Learning Centre (RCLC) has been awarded £3,000 from Greenham Trust through the Peter Baker Grant programme.

The #PeterBakerGrant focuses on supporting those in need within a 20-mile radius of Newbury town centre, including Reading. We are incredibly grateful to be recognised through this local funding stream. The funding will support our summer 2026 project: Stitching New Beginnings – Sewing Skills for Confidence and Community

Reading Community Learning Centre is a safe and welcoming space where migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, grow and build brighter futures.

Many of the women we support face significant barriers, including isolation, language difficulties and limited opportunities. During the 2024/2025 academic year, we supported 595 women from 41 different countries and delivered 2,344 information, advice and guidance sessions.

Our sewing classes offer far more than practical skills. They provide a vital first step towards confidence, connection and independence in a safe, supportive, women-only environment.

Over 10 weeks (20 hours), learners:
🧵 Learn to use sewing machines
🧵Cut patterns and create garments
🧵Make clothing for themselves and their families
🧵Save money while maintaining cultural identity

In our improvers’ class, women design more complex garments, with some exploring self-employment opportunities or progression into further education.

The courses also integrate literacy and numeracy skills, strengthening English language development and everyday confidence alongside vocational training.

With free crèche provision available, the programme benefits not only the women but also their children, who develop early English language skills and social, physical and creative abilities, helping prepare them for primary school.

Aisha Malik, CEO of Reading Community Learning Centre, said:

“This funding from Greenham Trust is more than a grant, it is an investment in women’s confidence, independence and belonging. Our sewing classes are often a first step for women who may have been isolated, unsure of their English, or new to Reading. In that classroom, they do not just learn how to use a sewing machine, they build friendships, practice language, share culture and begin to see new possibilities for themselves and their families. We are deeply grateful that Stitching New Beginnings can continue because of this support.”

The funding will cover tutor costs alongside essential running expenses including rent, management and resources, ensuring these life-changing sessions can continue.

We extend our sincere thanks to Greenham Trust and the Peter Baker Grant committee for investing in women, families and futures in our community.
